Apple needs to redefine itself, but that shouldn't take long

Image
We know that Apple can be OCD-ish about dictionaries at times, but is any brave Cupertino intern ready to step up and run the gauntlet? Apple's definition of itself in its own Dictionary application is looking dusty, while all it really needs is a quick mention of the company's latest gifts to the world -- and we don't just mean the Patent Wars.

[Thanks, Ishmaeel]

Social TV investment not matching opportunity?

Posted by on March 30, 2012

We?ve been reporting the latest social TV investment and acquisition activity (stories) as they?re announced, and Sharp TV?s Anne-Marie Roussel has compiled a table that lists them all together. While it looks like a lot of activity ? and we?re seeing a lot more this year ? it prompted All Things D?s Peter Kafka to proclaim, ?The social TV gold rush is smaller than you think.? He writes:

?It actually strikes me as fairly modest. Even if you assume that most of this stuff fizzles, it seems like the chance to create a next-generation TV Guide, or a next-generation Nielsen ratings service, would inspire entrepreneurs and check-writers to be even more aggressive.?

That?s especially true if you consider Jack Myers? prediction that social TV will become a $30 billion business by 2020. The amount of publicly-announced investment so far (there?s more behind the scenes) certainly isn?t matching the opportunity. Add to the equation that TV is financially thriving while other media forms are struggling, and perhaps some of those Silicon Valley VCs should stop investing in yet-another-social-network and start pumping more dollars into the future of television.

Sprint outlines LTE coverage plans at RCA Expo

Image
Sprint customer? Still supping from the 3G cup? Well if you were wondering if you'll ever get to try the sweet taste of LTE, wonder no more. The Now Network revealed a coverage map at the RCA Expo, and the image above was kindly grabbed by PC Mag's Sascha Segan. Those green areas are the locales that'll be getting LTE, and as you can see it's a fairly comprehensive -- though not altogether surprising -- spread. The rollout is said to be planned for completion by 2014, so you've still got time for that handset upgrade. Those of you in Montana or one of the many other blue areas on the map aren't entirely forgotten, though, as these regions will have roaming agreements in place, so no need for an extra contract just yet.

FreedomPop plans to give away mobile internet, still make money somehow

Image
"Freemium" mobile broadband outfit FreedomPop has pulled back the curtain on how it plans to make money while giving away 4G internet. In an interview with GigaOm, Marketing VP Tony Miller revealed that once it has got enough consumers hooked on the gratis data, his company will start selling premium features, potentially including a VoIP solution for the network, now supplied by Clearwire after the collapse of LightSquared. The company will also charge a penny for every megabyte used over the free monthly allowance (currently pegged at 1GB) and build a social network where more data can be earned and traded between friends. Alongside the WiMAX shell for the iPhone, we can also expect to see an iPod Touch edition, USB dongle and mobile hotspot arrive before the network's launch. The company doesn't have too long to iron out the kinks in the business plan however, as it'll go live in the third quarter of 2012.
